Madonna Buder: The Iron Nun

This Woman’s History Month, we’re highlighting a truly remarkable woman whose impact didn’t slow down with age—Sister Madonna Buder.

Giving Running A Shot

Madonna Buder entered a convent at the age of 23, dedicating her life to service and faith.

Her passion for running didn’t start until later in life, when a priest encouraged her to give it a try.

Initially, she thought running didn’t make sense—it seemed pointless, especially since she was used to more interactive sports.

But the priest explained how running could harmonize the mind, body, and soul, and that it could bring a sense of fulfillment.

Taking his advice, she gave it a shot. She completed about half a mile in 5 minutes—in the dark! She was in her 40s at the time and was encouraged to continue running.

Just five weeks later, she entered her first competition. The Iron Nun

Her most remarkable achievement came when she became the oldest person to complete an IRONMAN® Canada at 82 years and 33 days old.

The IRONMAN® includes swimming 2.4 miles, biking 112 miles, and running a marathon of 26.2 miles—an incredible feat at any age. She completed it all in 16 hours and 22 minutes.

Overall, Sister Madonna has completed nearly 400 triathlons, including 45 Ironman races, all after turning 50.

Her perseverance earned her a spot in the USA Triathlon Hall of Fame in 2014, making her an inspiration to athletes of all ages.

Lessons from Madonna Buder

Madonna Buder has shared powerful wisdom for older adults, urging us to rethink aging and our potential.

She believes that we’re not done until we think we are, emphasizing, “You become what you think. So be careful of what you think, in every aspect of your being.”

She also encourages us to take the time to truly get to know ourselves and uncover our hidden talents. According to her, we all have unique skills, but we can’t tap into them until we recognize them. And once we do, it’s our responsibility to use them to their fullest.

In an interview with USA Triathlon, she expanded on her philosophy by highlighting the 7 D’s for success:

  1. Dream

  2. Desire

  3. Dedication

  4. Discipline

  5. Determination

  6. To Dare

  7. To Do It

Her message is clear: if you believe in yourself and dedicate your life to your goals, there’s no age limit to what you can achieve.
